BLENDING is a regional project that connects four creative festivals from the Western Balkans with the aim to strengthen regional cooperation and support the sustainable development of the cultural and creative sectors. The project brings together SUPEREXPOSURE (Trebinje), PDP Conference (Novi Sad), FLUID Design Forum (Cetinje), and POP-UP Sarajevo to jointly empower young creatives and cultural workers across the region.

The project focuses on informal education, peer learning, and mobility for young designers, illustrators, and photographers. It supports the development of their creative practices through open calls, travelling exhibitions, and creative residencies that explore themes of sustainability, such as green design and environmental-friendly art and design practices.

In parallel, BLENDING builds the capacities of festival organisers and young cultural managers through practical workshops on project planning, visibility, and cultural management. By working together, the festivals share knowledge, expand their networks, and create space for joint initiatives that strengthen the visibility and sustainability of the regional creative scene.

BLENDING promotes cross-border collaboration, and a shared vision for a resilient and thriving creative industry in the Western Balkans.

ARTWORK

Theme: SWEET 16

Imagine the excitement of turning sixteen — a moment where youth dances with the dawn of adulthood. Sweet 16 is all about balancing the joy of youth with the wisdom of experience. It’s a celebration of growth, where new responsibilities mingle with cherished memories of simpler times.

As we step into our 16th year, we embrace the responsibilities that come with it. It’s not just about cutting the cake or blowing out candles, but also about making thoughtful choices and leaving a mark .We’re growing up, and with that comes a commitment to our well-being, our society, our planet, and the legacy we leave for future generations.

Reflecting on the fun and laughter, the creativity, and the milestones we’ve reached, we’re also looking forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead. It’s about finding the sweet spot between fun and responsibility, all while keeping the party going. Who’s going to cut the cake?
Theme: BUBBLE

In a society oriented towards the individual, over time, each individual becomes a society unto themselves. In this newly formed society, everything is precisely defined – from the type of people we spend time with, through the content we consume, to the food we eat. Whether it’s millennials, Netflix, or oat milk, these choices form the walls of our bubble, which by its nature implies the existence of other people’s bubbles with which our bubble rarely comes into contact. Nurturing our bubble is a responsibility we have towards ourselves, and the strength and sustainability of ourselves depend on the strength of our bubble. Creativity has always emerged within a bubble, and only through confiding into such personal questions has it managed to present the most universal experiences of the entire society. In the bubble, the personal becomes intimate, and through creating, the personal becomes universal.

With this open call, the organizers invite photographers and other visual creators to respond to the theme BUBBLE by examining their own bubble (social, cultural, political…) – what’s it made of, how spacious it is, and how they feel within it, but also to peek beyond its boundaries to potentially get to know different intimate worlds and thereby enrich their own experience.

Remember – the road to other bubbles is paved with curiosity and genuine interest in the experiences of others!
* GIVE ME A PROMISE FOR THE FUTURE

No one will say it out loud, but you can see it in the eyes
of those with whom you work. It comes down to the
following: “What will I be able to do?” … “Is it possible to
make a living out of it?” “Is there any point in learning it?”
Of course, there is no right or wrong answer. You cannot
expect anyone to promise you that. It would be child-like
to do so and unworthy of academic discourse, but, deep
down, we know that this need is genuine, necessary,
human and common to all of us. Regardless of our
position and age. It would be fair to say something.
Being unprepared (which includes cowardice) to meet
expectations, is, in fact, what hurts the most.
This world is meaningless,
One of the key problems faced by modern man is the
question of the meaning of life… the meaning that
is increasingly difficult to find on this damaged and
ravished planet, in an atomized society of individuals
held together by egoism, greed, primitivism and fear…
The question about meaning is raised by us who assume
that every time we press the light switch, lights will
come on, and that every time we turn on the tap, water
will flow. We, who communicate without content, hoard
objects, use technology we do not understand and
uncritically submit to it, raise this question… We who
believe that this world is only ours.
Give me a promise for the future.
Even if we really mean it, feel it, and want it, we tend to
avoid these words. They are binding. They do not allow
us to step back, relativize and stand aside. They call for
answers and action. We do not have an answer to give.
We might be ready for action, but a clear goal, strategy,
courage, will, comrades-in-arms elude us. From year to
year, Fluid topics are becoming “bigger”, more political,
more complex, more painful and tougher to discuss. We
feel that the field where we play with design is too small,
and we need to find allies for answers and the battle.
In this quest for the big and all-encompassing, we often
forget how powerful tool design is. However, we should
first win recognition for ourselves in our field and believe
that our strategies will help in a decisive fight for the
future. And we should do this on daily basis.
Promise me, promise me, promise me, promise me.
There is no room for fear. The future will come. One way
or another. It is not much consolation. Perhaps it would
be wiser to promise ourselves a different world. A world
where the design process and its results will exclusively
be a tool to help make the planet sustainable, shared
and real again. That this and only this will be considered
design. For the real world. The unnecessary rest of it can
be addressed by AI as well.
Give me a promise for the future.
I promise. The future will rely much more on the past.

* Konstrakta, thank you for the lines.
